Sainsbury’s AI facial recognition under scrutiny
UK supermarket Sainsbury’s has suspended facial recognition technology at its East Dulwich outlet after a customer was wrongly challenged as a shoplifter. Sainsbury’s blamed human error and said Facewatch’s system is 99.98% accurate. The retailer said trials at two stores reduced recorded theft and anti-social behaviour by 46%, with more than 90% of offenders not returning. Civil liberties group Big Brother Watch called for the technology to be scrapped. (BBC)
