Aldi, Lidl officially designated as large UK grocers
The UK Competition & Markets Authority has designated German discounters Aldi and Lidl as Large Grocery Retailers, subjecting them to property restrictions already applying to major supermarkets. The rules prohibit agreements preventing competitors opening nearby, while existing arrangements can be reviewed. The CMA said the decision would strengthen competition and consumer choice, reflecting the discounters’ growing influence in the UK grocery market. (CMA)
